A deep, rich, vibrant green, square-cut Colombian emerald, weighing 1.22 carats, radiates from within a stunning and sophisticated Art Deco mounting, hand fabricated in platinum – circa 1925. The refined mounting is adorned with neoclassical hand engraving and is enlivened on the tapered shoulders with graduated trios of small sparkling diamonds. A rare, ravishing and classic vintage jewel.

Edmond Avakian, who founded the house in 1969, studied to be an engineer but later decided that his true passion lay in jewelry. Bringing his engineering mindset to the design of jewels, the first word that came to him was “movement”. Today, spinning, twirling and swinging are trademark features of Avakian jewels and nowhere is this better demonstrated with such panache than this one-off necklace set with a 78 carat Colombian emerald and 53 carats of diamonds. Despite the value of the stones, Edmond Avakian added a very playful twist: the central flower motif spins with the ease of a rotor and keeps whirring long after it has been nudged. No proof needed that fine jewels and mechanics make for novel designs.
After starting off in London in 1912, jewelry and antique silver dealer S.J. Shrubsole opened a New York shop in 1936 and, in the subsequent eight decades, has acquired and sold a wide variety of ultra valuable items. At TEFAF, the firm will exhibit these Colombian emerald pendant earrings, which date back to about 1850. Each 18-karat-gold earring centers on smaller 0.4-carat emeralds at the base and a larger 2-carat cushion-shaped emerald at the bottom; 52 diamonds surround the earrings’ emeralds.
This rare and ravishing mid-Victorian jewel radiates with 10 closely-set bright green Colombian emeralds, totaling 1.75 carats, arrayed in an oval cluster dotted with tiny rose-cut diamonds and supported by a fanciful ring shank. Handcrafted in 15K gold, hence most likely of British origin, this delightful delicacy is not intended for rugged everyday wear. Uniquely beautiful.
