David Marshall has been creating collections and bespoke jewelry for over 25 years – it’s what he has always loved. Every single piece of jewelry that leaves his workshop has had a lot of time, and love lavished on it. David Marshall believes that really shows in the work. Working closely with his team of craftsmen, they bring his designs to life in the finest materials – platinum, 18-carat gold, diamonds and colored gemstones.

For 30 years, David Marshall has been creating jewelry for some of London’s top jewelry houses and special commission designs for private clients—and last month, he opened his first boutique, at 42 Davies Street in London’s posh Mayfair neighborhood, to highlight his own designs. The two-level store features an array of his diamond and gemstone designs on the main level, including new designs using jade, green tourmalines, seed pearls, blue sapphires, and tanzanite. Prices start at $1,600 for classic diamond pieces and go beyond $1 million for elaborate custom designs. The lower level is designed for private appointments, where clients can meet with the designer to create bespoke pieces starting at $10,000. The pieces are made in his workshops in London’s jewelry district.

Trained as a bench jeweler, Marshall carefully oversaw the crafting of his boutique, employing the British cabinetmaker Jonathan Sainsbury to create the bespoke wood cabinets and furniture. Marshall decorated the store with a subtle color palette and defining elements including an ornate Victorian mirror, crystal chandeliers, and an inviting Champagne bar for clients to enjoy while browsing the jewelry.

The majority of the furnishings, from the door handles to the central sales desk on the ground floor have been made to order specifically for the shop and most carry the brand’s insignia.

While the upper level features the all-important jewels and a champagne bar, the lower level, designed to be used as an event or meeting space, has been fitted out with equally as much attention to detail, and the stairs leading down to it are decorated with bespoke wallpaper printed with the brand’s jewels that can be changed seasonally.

Ileana Makri Uncompromisingly Contemporary and Simultaneously Timeless Jewelry

18k Rose Gold Lady Bug Pendant with Rubies and Black Diamonds
18k Rose Gold Lady Bug Pendant with Rubies and Black Diamonds

Fascinated by the beautiful iridescent beetles of native Greece Ileana embarked on a journey to discover the bugs and beetles of the world. A book by Christopher Marley, Pheromone which she discovered at Barney’s in New York, blew her away with its fascinating beetle varieties in wonderful vibrant colors. Having been enchanted by the diversity of shape and the glorious color combinations I came across Ileana felt the irresistible urge to translate the world of bugs into my work.

18K Yellow Gold Necklace With Round Yellow Sapphire, Square Rodolite, Oval Chrom Diopside And Pear Orange Sapphires On 45cm Yellow Gold Chain

To compete with nature is an impossible goal, but Ileana tried her best using multicolored diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tsavorites and a lot of love.

The talented jewelry designer, Ileana Makri, was born in Greece and still resides there. She travels extensively for design inspiration, and shares her time between Greece, London, Paris and New York City, allowing her to embrace and celebrate different cultures and landscapes within her craft.

Originally obtaining a degree in Business Administration, Ileana then went on to follow her true passion and studied jewelry design at the G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica).

From a young age, Ileana has been fascinated by gemstones. Their geometric shapes, bright colors and overwhelming light. This lead her to design her eponymous Gem collection. In this collection she recreates gemstones with her favorite technique of pave setting in vivid vibrant colors.

In 1987, Ileana ventured into retail, opening her first store, Mageia, meaning enchantment or magic in Greek. This treasure chest in the heart of Athens still thrives with an eclectic assortment of international fashion, art, and jewelry; showcasing collections from The Row, Lucien Pellat Finet, Denis Colomb, Rick Owen, and of course Ileana Makri’s signature fine jewelry collection.

In addition to her travels, Ileana continues to draw inspiration from multicultural symbols and their meaning. Her jewelry features a range of mystical and figurative symbols. “Symbols have a broad, universal appeal that crosses cultures”, says the designer, who draws inspiration from various religions and other beliefs including Greek mythology. Ileana is particularly intrigued by the “evil eye”, a symbol that in Mediterranean countries serves as protection from negative forces.

The collections, have an irresistible feminine appeal, stamped by Ileana’s signature refined aesthetic and use of old world craftsmanship as well as the astounding attention to detail and her boundless creativity. The underlying “rock chic” approach to the design makes her jewelry uncompromisingly contemporary and simultaneously timeless. In her own words Ileana Makri creates “jewelry for no special occasion.”

Ileana’s fascination with nature and symbolism inspired her to develop her eponymous best-selling Snake Collection, now considered among her classics. Working in her signature aesthetic and her unique interpretation of beauty, Ileana’s most recent addition to the range is the Berus ring. A unique piece from this collection created in organic form, seamlessly combining the natural strength of the beast with Ileana’s refined and sensual interpretation of it.

The Victorian Rosebery Pearl and Diamond Tiara

The Rosebery pearl and diamond tiara, bracelet and brooch which belonged to Hannah, Countess of Rosebery, feature sizable natural pearls and clusters of diamonds-epitomizing the grandeur of Victorian court adornment.

ab14601c632b26bdc74c8628d1b5e833

“The Rosebery pearl and diamond tiara, bracelet and brooch were at the heart of Lady Rosebery’s vast array of magnificent jewels, which rivaled those of the crowned heads of Europe at the time. They are a rare survival of 19th century English aristocratic splendour, as so much ancestral jewellery has been sold anonymously, remounted or broken down. Having descended through various branches of the family and survived the vicissitudes of fashion, the jewels were sold from a private collection for the first time since their creation nearly 140 years ago.” – Keith Penton, Head of Jewels Christie’s London

This striking tiara was once the property of a woman said to have been the wealthiest woman in England, Hannah, Countess of Rosebery (1851-1890), and was an important member of a jewel collection rich enough to rival a royal collection. The Rosebery Pearl and Diamond Tiara has a base of clusters of large button (bouton) natural pearls surrounded by old-cut diamonds and a top of seven natural pearl and diamond drops, all set in silver and gold. It’s a versatile diadem with multiple detachable pieces; the top pieces can be removed (in the same fashion as the Londonderry Tiara , also crafted by Garrard) leaving the bottom row as a smaller tiara, and the buttons can also be used to form six brooches with the top pieces as pendants. A bracelet and brooch, each featuring more clusters of button pearls and diamonds, completed the set.

Rosebery-Pearl-and-Diamond-Tiara

The tiara dates from about 1878, the same year Hannah de Rothschild married the 5th Earl of Rosebery. Born into the famous banking empire, she was the only child of Mayer de Rothschild and when he died in 1874, the fortune she inherited made her the richest woman in England at the time. Her aristocratic marriage did not come without obstacles, caused particularly by religion (she was Jewish, he was not, and there were hurdles to jump on both sides), but they became an influential couple and her money financed her popular husband’s rise through the political structure. He eventually became prime minister, but she sadly would not live to see it; she died suddenly at the age of 39 in 1890.

Following her death, her husband stored her jewels for nearly 20 years, until their eldest son married and the jewels were split between their four children. Harry, Lord Dalmeny (the future 6th Earl of Rosebery), wed in 1909 and this set of pearl and diamond jewelry was given to his bride, Dorothy Grosvenor, granddaughter of the 1st Duke of Westminster and sister to the 3rd Duke. It passed down in the family and was last known to be part of the collection of the current Duke and Duchess of Westminster , because it was included in a magazine feature on their family jewels. It was sold by Christie’s in 2011 as the property of a private collector, where the tiara went for $1.9 million and the brooch and bracelet together brought in nearly $950,000.

“When I first saw this stone I wanted to set it in a jewellery piece with diamonds bursting around the Paraiba, a splash of diamonds setting the stage for this dramatic gemstone…..I love working with Paraibas, the natural glowing color is so magnetic. As the design developed I really tried to fuse a romance of the past with modern structure, to fantastic feminine effect. Creating a piece as elegant and modern as it is delicate and dramatic. ” says Kat.

Martin Katz Passion for Gems

Renowned for his exquisite taste and an unparalleled eye for transforming stones into artistic creations, Martin Katz founded his eponymous company in 1988. The company, Martin Katz, Ltd quickly gained international prominence with a clientele that includes Forbes 400 business leaders, US Ambassadors and other individuals of affluence with a collector’s spirit.

18 carat imperial topaz ring, with two step-cut trapezoid diamonds and micro-set with diamonds, sapphires, tsavorite garnets and tourmalines.

Martin’s passion for gems has earned him wide acclaim for designing beautifully-crafted, couture-quality pieces inspired from his love of vintage jewelry – contemporary pieces with an ‘old soul’. Each piece is one-of-a-kind or limited in production, signed, numbered and made with meticulous attention to detail. His work has been auctioned at Christie’s and Sotheby’s with the hammer prices being significantly higher than the original price they sold for in his salon.

Throughout the years, Katz’s creations have adorned A-list celebrities such as Jessica Biel, who wore his earrings at her wedding to Justin Timberlake, Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Sally Field, Barbra Streisand, Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Annette Bening, Johnny Depp, Mark Wahlberg, Colin Firth and the list goes on. Having been one of the first to lend jewels to the stars on the Red Carpet, he opened doors for the many others that do so today. Los Angeles Magazine wrote, “[Katz] has taken on Tinseltown like a fairy gem father, adorning stars with glittering rocks for their time in the spotlight and no doubt making such establishment jewelers as Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier turn green with envy in the process.”

His body of work is not limited to jewelry: Katz designed the Victoria’s Secret $5 million diamond bra in 2009, created jeweled sunglasses for Ray-Ban, jeweled cell phone cases for Motorola and most recently designed a $1 million perfume bottle for Donna Karan.
